Deck the Halls and Angels We Have Heard on High are both Christmas Carols that have been sung for hundreds of years.

The music for Deck the Halls originated in Wales in the 16th century where it was a dancing song. Mozart also used the music in the 1700s in a piano and violin duet. The first lyrics published for the song were written by a Welsh poet and titled 'Nos Galan' which means New Years Eve. The current lyrics to the carol have been sung for about a century and are of American origin. However, they may have come from Welsh miners who immigrated to the Appalachian Mountains.

Angels We Have Heard on High commemorates the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, in which the shepherds outside Bethlehem encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising the newborn child. A 'newer' Christmas carol, when compared to Deck the Halls, the most common English version was translated in 1862. The words of the song are based on a traditional French carol known as 'Les Angels dans nos campagnes' literally, 'Angels in our countryside'). One of the most memorable features in its chorus is 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo!' which is Latin for 'Glory to God in the Highest'.

Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Angels We Have
Heard on High

Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.

Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?

Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.

Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
