"The exuberantly witty dialogue is quite enough to keep
the audience...roaring with laughter."
- London Daily Mirror
The Chemainus Theatre Festival is pleased to present this delightful rousing romp of a comedy, Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer. Filled with sumptuous costumes, witty dialogue, and physical farce, this uproarious tale turns romance upside down in the English countryside.
Most everyone has been the target of practical jokes, and most have been out on blind dates. Goldsmith fills his 1773 comedy with mistaken identities, causing everything to be turned topsy-turvy!
Funny and perceptive, She Stoops to Conquer is downright tomfoolery! It celebrates class, courtship and families that are as crazy as they come. Charles Marlow, tongue-tied and uptight, needs a lesson in the art of love. Miss Kate Hardcastle would love to help him...if only he would look at her! The barmaid is willing to help the situation- but there's more to her than meets the eye.
This entertaining play was one of the most popular of the 18th Century and it remains one of the most frequently produced classics today. His play changed the face of comic theatre, eclipsing the popular sentimental comedy of the day, and inaugurated a new style of physical, laughing comedy
