If you like Jimmy Stewart ... Bob Newhart ... and Walter Brennan ... you will love this show!
Don't miss the opportunity to see the Canadian classic comedy Letter From Wingfield Farm by Dan Needles, directed by Douglas Beattie and starring Rod Beattie at the Chemainus Theatre Festival - January 21st to February 14th.
"Beattie is astonishingly adept at transforming himself from one character to another in a matter of seconds, calling up echoes of a crotchety Walter Brennan, a gawky Jimmy Stewart or a flustered Bob Newhart." - The Toronto Star
Known to television audiences as 'Walt Wingfield', actor Rod Beattie has become synonymous with the hilarious Wingfield Farm series that have been endearing audiences for over 18 years. In November 1998, a series of thirty half-hour TV episodes, entitled Wingfield, made its debut on CBC Television. These episodes have garnered rave reviews and played to sold-out houses in Toronto, London, Stratford, Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Saint John, Fredericton and a host of smaller communities across Canada.
The Wingfield Farm episodes are a Canadian series of six one-man plays: Letter from Wingfield Farm, Wingfield's Progress, Wingfield's Folly, Wingfield Unbound, Wingfield on Ice and Wingfield's Inferno.
They tell the story of Walt Wingfield, a stock broker-turned-farmer living in a fictional small town in Ontario called Persephone Township and his various misadventures while trying to make a living in the agriculture business. The plays progress as a series of letters written by Walt to his friend, the editor of the Larkspur newspaper.
In Letter From Wingfield Farm, Walt Wingfield has traded in his pinstripe suit for overalls and moved to a hundred acre farm - the local township sounds the alarm. Weekend farmers are common, but this man thinks he can make a living with a broken down racehorse and a single furrow plough. The results are hilarious.
A veteran of fifteen seasons with the Stratford Festival (most recently in Wingfield's Inferno in the 2005 season), Rod Beattie has become one of the most respected and versatile actors in Canadian theatre. His extensive credits include radio, television, film and live performances across Canada. Rod is the winner of the 1991-92 Dora Mavor Moore Award (best performance by an actor in a leading role) for his performance in the first three Wingfield plays.
The Playbill Dining Room buffet is available before every show.
